4K projectors

Every projector on this page has an imaging chip that addresses a 4K grid, either natively or by shifting pixels fast enough to place all of them. What is not on this page is the far larger group of projectors advertised as 4K because they accept a 4K signal and then show it on a 1080p chip. That distinction is the single most common way projector listings mislead people, and it is worth understanding before you spend anything: a 4K input on a 1080p chip gives you a picture no sharper than 1080p, however it is labelled on the box.

Is pixel shifting real 4K?

It depends on how many pixels end up on the wall. A chip that fires four times per frame places all 8.3 million pixels of a 4K image and we count it as 4K. A chip that fires twice places 4.15 million, which is 1080p doubled, and we do not. Both are sometimes sold under names containing the number four, so we state the method on every product page.

What is the difference between 4K UHD and 4K DCI?

4K UHD is 3840 by 2160, the shape of a television picture. 4K DCI is 4096 by 2160, the slightly wider shape used in cinemas. DCI has more pixels, not fewer, so both count as 4K here and each row says which one it is.

Do I need 4K at the size I am planning?

On a screen under about 100 inches, viewed from a normal sofa distance, the jump from 1080p to 4K is real but modest. Above that it becomes obvious. If your budget is tight and your screen is small, a bright 1080p projector in a room that suits it will usually look better than a dim 4K one that does not.
