Gaming projectors

Gaming asks two things of a projector that films do not: the picture has to arrive quickly after you press the button, and it has to refresh often enough to look smooth. We only quote an input lag figure where the maker published one at a stated resolution and refresh rate, because a lag number with no resolution attached is not a measurement. A claim of under twenty milliseconds in game mode, with nothing said about what signal that applies to, tells you almost nothing. Where a figure exists you will see it on the row, and where one does not we leave the space empty rather than fill it.

How much input lag is too much?

Under about twenty milliseconds at 1080p and sixty hertz feels immediate for most people playing most things. Under ten is genuinely competitive. Between twenty and forty you will notice it in anything needing precise timing but not in a racing game or an adventure. Above forty it gets in the way.

Does 120Hz matter more than 4K for gaming?

For fast games, usually yes. A 1080p picture at 120 hertz feels markedly smoother than a 4K picture at 60, and most consoles will let you choose. Several projectors here do 4K at 60 and 1080p at 120, which lets you pick per game rather than once and for all.

Will a gaming projector work for films too?

Almost always. The things that make a projector good for gaming, low lag and a high refresh rate, take nothing away from films. What differs is where the money went: a gaming-first projector often spends less on contrast and colour accuracy than a home theater one at the same price.

Does the room matter as much for gaming?

More, if anything, because people game with lights on. A projector that looks superb in a blacked-out room can look washed out in a lit one. Use the room finder to say how much light you have and the brightness check will tell you whether a given projector holds up.
