Outdoor projectors

Projecting outdoors is a brightness problem and a convenience problem at once. After sunset there is no ambient light to fight, so a modest projector can look excellent on a large screen, but there is also no wall, so the surface you project onto matters more than it does indoors. The projectors on this page are the ones we rate for the job: bright enough for a sheet or an outdoor screen once it is properly dark, and either light enough to carry out or straightforward to set up and pack away. None of them will work in daylight, and anything advertised as if it would is overstating the case.

What do I project onto outside?

A proper outdoor screen if you have one, a plain light sheet pulled tight if you do not. Tension is what matters most: a sagging surface ruins the geometry far more visibly than the fabric choice does. A pale wall works well if you have one facing the right way.

How dark does it need to be?

Properly dark, meaning after dusk rather than during it, and away from a security light or a neighbour's floodlight. The last half hour of twilight makes more difference than any specification on this page. Street lighting is the usual thing people forget to check.

What about sound?

Outdoors is the one place a projector's own speakers struggle badly, because there are no walls to reflect sound back. Even a small Bluetooth speaker makes a larger difference outdoors than indoors. Check for Bluetooth output on the product page, since not every projector will send audio out.
