What this calculator works out

Two things cap your screen size: the flat wall you have to put it on, and how far back the projector can sit. We work out both and give you the smaller of the two, because that is the one that actually decides it.

Should I just buy the biggest screen that fits?

Usually not quite. Brightness falls with area, so every extra inch of screen makes the same projector dimmer. A screen one size down in a room with light in it often looks better than the largest one that technically fits.

How far back should the seats be?

A rough guide is one and a half times the screen width for a 16:9 picture, which puts a 120 inch screen about four metres from the sofa. Closer is fine with a genuinely 4K picture and uncomfortable with 1080p.
